ACCORDING to a 2021 World Bank study, the Philippines generates a staggering 2.7 million tons of plastic waste per year, of which an estimated 20 percent ends up in the ocean. The accumulation of mismanaged plastic waste poses a threat to poor urban areas, as plastic pollution may block the drainage system and cause flooding events.
