THE social democratic campaign for the presidency during the last electoral contest was initially regarded as "Don Quixotic." As expected, it did not officially obtain a good number of votes, but it surprisingly gained the notice and tacit approval of millions of the viewing public. The social democratic campaign centered on the value and character of true politics. It gave clear outlines of policy responses to the ills confronting the nation. It challenged the people to recapture their fundamental right to hope and build the nation of their dreams.

A faint hope for change was actually lighted. The amount of political goodwill that the social democratic campaign generated showed that many among the people are open to the fundamental reform of the political system. But as the nation today enters the forthcoming political campaign season, early indications suggest that the growing sentiment for change did not touch the hearts of politicians. Early-bird candidates are projecting their political intention through promotional gimmickry that highlights their financial prowess more. The current breed of old and upcoming politicians still prefers to keep the abused version of politics.
