Paalam outpoints Irish foe to secure spot in quarterfinals

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino boxer Carlo Paalam advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics men's 57kg class after outpointing Irish Jude Gallagher in the round of 16 at the North Paris Arena on Wednesday evening, July 31 (Manila time).

Gallagher made a good account of himself in his Olympic debut but Paalam's smarts and experience stood out, as the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist gained the scores of four 29-28s and one 30-27.
