May 7 institutionalized as Health Workers' Day in Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY — Mayor Benjamin Magalong has ratified City Council Ordinance 26, Series of 2024, institutionalizing the celebration of Health Workers' Day on May 7 of every year in the Summer Capital.
The ordinance is based on Republic Act 10069 that declares May 7 as a special working holiday to give due recognition to the important role and contributions of health workers who provide vital health services to the public.
RA 10069 defines health workers as 'persons who are engaged in health and health-related work regardless of employment status, including medical, allied health professionals, administrative and support services personnel, and those employed in hospitals, sanitaria, health infirmaries, health centers, rural health units, barangay health stations, clinics and such other health-related establishments owned and operated by the government or its political subdivisions with original charters, or by the private sector.'
'The city government of Baguio recognizes the significant role of health workers who render their services and resources to address the health needs of individuals and the community, particularly the underserved,' the ordinance stated.
The city council earlier adopted Resolution261, Series of 2023, declaring May 7, 2023 as Health Workers' Day in the city.
The ordinance cited a provision in the 1987 Philippine Constitution which states that the State shall protect and promote the rights of the people and instill health consciousness among them.
Among the celebration's objectives are to provide a venue for health workers to participate in city-related activities; encourage the conduct of health worker-related events relevant to their profession, rights and welfare; encourage health institutions and organizations to conduct activities that will recognize the importance of health workers in the community; and more.
Suggested major activities designed to commemorate the day include an ecumenical prayer for health workers; education-information drive on their rights, welfare and benefits; services for wellness; health summit, discussions or other forums; fun run; and others.
