MANILA, Philippines — "Carina" has intensified into a super typhoon and is forecast to make landfall over northern Taiwan as it leaves the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said on Wednesday.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph, the super typhoon is moving northwestward at the speed of 20 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 5 p.m. bulletin.
