FAMILY migration involves families moving together to another country; one family member reuniting with another in another country; members accompanying another who is migrating for another reason, such as work or school; a migrant marrying a citizen of the country s/he is already in; a foreigner marrying another migrant in a destination country; or even an international adoption.

Because of the way it takes place, it is difficult to be precise as to how much family migration has actually taken place, most especially in developing countries. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), approximately 2.2 million moved to OECD member countries for family reasons in 2022, which exceeds the record 2 million before the coronavirus pandemic began.
