ISLAMABAD — Heavy rains in eastern Afghanistan have killed at least 40 people and injured nearly 350 others, Taliban officials said on Tuesday, while official media reported that at least 17 died when a bus overturned on a main highway.

Sharafat Zaman Amar, a spokesman for the South Asian country's Public Health Ministry, said 40 people died in Monday's storm and that 347 injured people had been brought to the Nangarhar Regional Hospital in Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province, for treatment.
