NEXT week, July 22, 2024, the constitutionally mandated annual event called "State of the Nation Address" (SONA), the President's report to the people, will happen again. And since this is a highly covered event by the national media, it has become some sort of fashion show. People dress to the nines to show their status, to highlight our local designers, to make a statement and to highlight their local culture.

Kusug-Tausug (Strength of the Tausug) party-list Rep. Shernee Tan-Tambut, who hails from Sulu province, dresses up yearly for this event to highlight her local culture. For her, although dressing up to show one's fashion sense is fine as she believes art is its own excuse for being, she believes that art gains more meaning when it serves a higher purpose. Thus, it becomes more relevant when it shows a facet of culture or reflects the history of a place or a people.
