ARGENTINA'S declaration of independence 208 years ago marked a significant milestone in its history, symbolizing the end of a prolonged struggle against colonial domination. The historic Congress of Tucumán — held in San Miguel de Tucumán — united representatives from diverse provinces to deliberate on Argentina's destiny. These delegates ratified the Declaration of Independence on July 9, 1816, formally asserting Argentina's autonomy and liberation from Spanish rule.

The journey to independence was rife with obstacles, as the United Provinces of Río de la Plata encountered staunch resistance from colonial forces and internal discord. Nonetheless, the Congress of Tucumán showcased remarkable solidarity and resolve in the face of adversity, laying the groundwork for the emergence of a new nation. The republican principles of freedom, equality and self-determination enshrined in the Declaration of Independence formed the bedrock for the establishment of a liberated Argentina.

Argentina and the Philippines

Together, Argentina and the Philippines have been streamlining access to their most competitive export sectors to enhance trade and investment flows in both directions. Furthermore, both nations have been actively seeking out new business opportunities for small and medium enterprises in Argentina and the Philippines to drive trade in innovative economic fields.

More recently, under their joint agenda, there was a strong emphasis on advancing science and technology. In conjunction with the commemoration of the 75th year of diplomatic relations last year, the Philippines and Argentina inked a cooperation agreement for the peaceful utilization of outer space through the Philippine Space Agency and the National Commission on Space Activities (Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales or Conae) of Argentina.

Additionally, both nations formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Department of Science and Technology-Metals Industry Research and Development Center and the Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia Industrial (National Institute of Industrial Technology) for technical collaboration as well as an MoU between the Philippine Department of Agriculture and the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture to bolster agricultural cooperation between our countries.
