THE Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to file murder charges against two principal suspects — two former policemen — and an accomplice for the killing of beauty queen contestant Geneva Lopez and her Israeli boyfriend Yitzak Cohen. In a press briefing at Camp Crame, Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos presented the two former policemen that investigators identified as the principal suspects in the killing of Lopez, 27, and Cohen, 37. The two former policemen were identified as Rommel Abuzo and Angelo Guiang, who were taken off the PNP roster for being absent without leave (AWOL). Abalos said Abuzo was dismissed in 2019, while Guiang was dismissed in February 2020. Abalos identified the third suspect as Jeffrey Santos, alias Jun Jun. Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief MGen. Leo Francisco said the surrender of alias Jun Jun was the key to the identification of the suspects.

Social pension gets public support

THE universal social pension for senior citizens and enhanced cybersecurity and data privacy measures for all government agencies earned the highest approval ratings among all national issues, with 90 percent of respondents in favor, survey shows. Social pension and cybersecurity were closely followed by a second group of issues (81 percent approval) revolving around peace and order, including the passage of the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act and the Senate probe into an illegal drug seizure in Alitagtag, Batangas, last April.
