A SIGNIFICANT day for environmental protection in the Arctic has arrived. As of July 1, a long-awaited international ban on the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by ships operating in these fragile waters has come into effect.
The ban, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2021, aims to safeguard the Arctic ecosystem from the devastating consequences of HFO spills. This thick and dirty fuel, notorious for its high sulfur content, poses a serious threat to marine life in the event of an accident.
