Phivolcs monitors Kanlaon, may raise alert level to 3

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) may raise the alert level over Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Island to 3 if its seismic activity worsens, its chief, Dr. Teresito 'Toto' Bacolcol, said on Tuesday.

Saying there is still no need for mass evacuation, Bacolcol, however, said that the concerned local government units (LGUs) must make sure that the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano was strictly off-limits to the public.
