THE Senate Committee on National Defense and Security accorded to Vice Adm. Alberto Carlos, erstwhile commander of the Western Command (Wescom), a venue that was not available or as conducive as what was provided to him by the Department of National Defense (DND). And that forum, with full media coverage, gave Carlos the opportunity to clear his name. If the committee was able to summon him while he was on "personal leave" to appear before it to shed light on the controversy surrounding him, one wonders why the DND or the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), with its authority and power, did not direct him to address the controversy instead of dodging it by going on leave. This brings us to the question: Did he really request to go on leave, or was he actually asked to do so and give way to his replacement?
