IN the year 63 BCE, the Roman general Pompey successfully conquered Jerusalem and its surrounding areas. The Romans replaced the dynasty in Judea of the Hasmonean, which had been in power since 140 BCE. Thereafter, in c. 40 BCE, Herod the Great was declared by the Roman Senate as the 'King of the Jews.'
