Brazil floods leave 57 dead, 70,000 homeless

(UPDATE) PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil: Raging floodwaters, mudslides and severe storms in southern Brazil, with the major city of Porto Alegre particularly hard hit, have left 57 people dead, 70,000 homeless, 74 injured and another 67 missing, the country's civil defense agency said Saturday.

The casualties did not include two people who died in an explosion at a flooded gas station in Porto Alegre, witnessed by an Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist, where rescue crews were attempting to refuel.
