THE decision of the United States to veto the United Nations Security Council draft resolution that would have recognized Palestine as a full UN member was shocking and painful. This after 12 members of the Security Council approved the recommendation that "the State of Palestine be admitted to membership" to the 193-member UN General Assembly for approval; only the conservative United Kingdom and neutral Switzerland abstained. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the veto, calling it "unfair, unethical and unjustified."

The US has become more and more isolated by the international community over its seemingly endless support for Israel, even after it has bombed and killed 35,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, starved more of them to death, and bombed Iran this week. All this was done with US-supplied munitions in retaliation for the killing of at least 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 250 hostages by Hamas, which has been named a terrorist organization by Western countries.
