In defense of the maligned camote

"WHY don't you go home and plant camote?" This is a favorite insult exasperated teachers hurl at pupils who are slow learners.

I first heard this epithet in the high school I went to in my home province. It was the favorite abusive insult of a teacher who was considered brilliant but impatient with class laggards.
