The NBA 2023-24 season is now playing their 60th games, on the homestretch for the end of the regular season in April. Now is the time to evaluate the new, controversial rule of the NBA which is the 65-game minimum rule. The 65 game rule mandates that players can only be eligible for any individual award if they play a minimum of 65 games. That includes the MVP award, All-NBA team inclusions, and other honors.
The biggest casualty of the 65-game rule is no other than reigning MVP Joel Embiid. Embiid has played 34 games this season, and as of this writing, the Philadelphia 76ers have 22 games left. Despite his stellar statistics, Embiid has lost his chance to be the next back-to-back MVP. The Sixers have accepted this, and wisely let him rest to be ready for the intense playoff wars.
