BEIJING: China on Tuesday set a growth target of 5 percent, in line with last year's gross domestic product (GDP) but a far cry from the double-digit expansion that for years drove the world's second-largest economy.

A year after the anointing of President Xi Jinping for a historic third term, the goals and budget will follow the opening of a meeting of the National People's Congress (NPC), which began at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT).
