WITH the demise of Ambassador Lauro Baja Jr. last Feb. 4, 2024, from a heart attack, the country lost one of its most outstanding senior diplomats and this column its most distinguished and knowledgeable contributor.

This writer first marveled at the abilities of Ambassador Baja during the Fifth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development hosted in June 1979 by the Philippines. I was a junior foreign service officer (FSO) and Ambassador Baja was a middle-level FSO. President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., as leader of the host country, wanted a report on all the negotiations going on daily from start to finish at the conference. It was the monumental task of Ambassador Baja to cover the negotiations of the various groups, commissions and committees of the organization and prepare the report as soon as the conference adjourned for the day.
