Then-presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelenskyy won the 2020 Ukraine elections pledging a peace deal with Russia, which first invaded in 2014, annexed the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea and backed ethnic Russian separatists in the Donbas region in the east.
