Magnolia turns back pesky Phoenix, sets up title duel vs SMB

MANILA, Philippines: Magnolia Chicken Timplados leaned on its vast playoff experience to repulse Phoenix Super LPG, 89-79 on Wednesday to seal a Finals spot against San Miguel Beer in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner's Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Hotshots led by 13 points at the close opening period and had their biggest lead at 74-53 early in the final period, before weathering a last-ditch stand by the Fuel Masters to eke out the Game 4 win en route to winning their semifinal series, 3-1.

It was a huge bounce-back win for the Hotshots, who blew an early 21-point lead in Game 3 and eventually, suffered a 103-85 blowout defeat at the hands of the young, but gritty Fuel Masters last Sunday.
Mork Barroca led the Hotshots with 21 points, highlighted by four triples, while adding five assists and four rebounds in over 32 minutes of action.
American import Tyler Bey added 20 points, 20 rebounds, four assists and two steals in another all-around effort, Ian Sangalang had 12 markers for Magnolia.
Magnolia will have little time to rest as it begins Game 1 of its best-of-seven title series against the well-rested San Miguel Beer on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Fuel Masters, one of the youngest squads this season, drew 17 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and three blocks from import Johnathan Williams.
Veteran guards RR Garcia and RJ Jazz added 12 and 11.
Forward Jason Perkins struggled against Magnolia's solid front court as he missed nine of his 12 attempts from the field to finish with just six points. He still managed to add six rebounds for Phoenix, which reached the semifinals for the first time since the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup under then coach Louie Alas.
