High court upholds PH-Japan trade deal

THE Supreme Court has upheld the validity of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA), a bilateral free trade deal signed in 2006 and ratified two years later during the Arroyo administration.

Two petitions were filed before the high court questioning the deal on the grounds that it violated the Constitution by providing equal treatment to Japanese investors by removing protections for Filipino-owned business and would lead to harmful health and environmental effects.
