Magnolia scrapes past tough Phoenix to take Game 1

MANILA, Philippines: Magnolia Chicken Timplados had to lean on American import Tyler Bey's all-important three-point play late in the game to hold off a tough Phoenix side, 82-79 to take Game 1 in their PBA Season 48 Commissioner's Cup semifinals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Bey's completed and-1 play inside the last 87 seconds shattered a 78-78 count, before knocking down one more free throw with under four seconds to go to steal the series-opening game against an upset-conscious Fuel Masters.

The game was marked by 15 leads changes and 16 deadlocks as Phoenix put on a tough stand despite just coming off a sudden death quarterfinal duel versus Meralco last Sunday.
Magnolia, which trailed by as many as nine points, managed to hold Phoenix import Johnathan Williams to just 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, though the NBA veteran still contributed 18 rebounds and seven rebounds.
Bey went on to lead Magnolia with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Paul Lee and Mark Barroca added 11 and 10.
Jason Perkins led Phoenix with 25 points.
Magnolia shoots for a 2-0 bulge this Friday when the semifinal series shifts to the Mall of Asia Arena.
