AI and the maritime industry

FROM THE DESK OF THE IMO AMBASSADOR

THE term 'artificial intelligence' (AI) was first coined in 1956 by John McCarthy, one of the pioneers of AI research. In the early 1960s, AI technology made the first industrial robot to do the job of lifting and stacking metal parts at a General Motors plant in New Jersey. Since then, there has been no turning back.

AI has become a valuable tool in manufacturing, agriculture, medicine, entertainment and the military. At the same time, it has also been regarded with both concern and suspicion.
