WHILE much of the world has Christmas in the rearview mirror by now, people in some Eastern Orthodox traditions will celebrate the holy day on January 7. Certain Eastern Orthodox churches, including those in Russian and other traditions, follow the ancient Julian calendar, which runs 13 days later than the Gregorian calendar, used by Catholic and Protestant churches as well as by much of the secular world for everyday use. Other Orthodox, including those in the Greek tradition and, now, some Ukrainian churches, celebrate Christmas on the same date as Western churches.

READ: GIR dips in December but still up from 2022

THE country's gross international reserves (GIR) settled at $102.45 billion at the end of December, down slightly from November but substantially higher compared to a year earlier, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported late on Friday. The drop from $102.72 billion a month earlier was said to have been primarily due to national government payments of its foreign currency debt obligations. It remained far short of the record $108.79 billion recorded in 2021 but was still a marked improvement from 2022's $96.15 billion. The latest GIR level, the BSP said in a statement, "represents a more than adequate external liquidity buffer equivalent to 7.7 months' worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income." It was also said to be equivalent to around "6.0 times the country's short-term external debt based on original maturity and 3.8 times based on residual maturity." GIR levels are considered adequate "if it can finance at least three months' worth of the country's imports of goods and payments of services and primary income," the BSP noted.
