A NEW year is a time when people are optimistic. Here at home, 86 percent are optimistic that 2024 will be a better year. In the new year 2023, a similar 95 percent were optimistic of a good year, too. But in December, 66 percent said it proved to be a bad year. Every year it's the same, people's optimism is heartening but it turns out to not be realistic. The glass is half empty.

Too many uncertainties, erring too strongly on the bad side. At least for the world. Here, at home, we'll likely fare not so badly. Let me discuss the world.
