Breaking free from the Jonah complex: Embracing a new you in the new year

THE new year often brings a sense of fresh beginnings and opportunities, but for some, it can trigger feelings associated with the Jonah complex — fears, hesitations, or avoidance of embracing new challenges or changes.

The Jonah complex refers to a psychological phenomenon where individuals fear or resist their own potential for growth, success or responsibilities. It's based on the biblical story of Jonah, who attempted to evade his divine calling and responsibilities, fearing the challenges it presented. The concept was popularized by psychoanalyst Abraham Maslow.
