Following the Second World War, acclaimed actor Audrey Hepburn survived on aid supplies from the United Nations during her own childhood in Europe, and as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), she travelled to virtually every region of the world.

In 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted a Convention on the Rights of the Child without a vote. Seated from left to right are Under-Secretary-General for Human Rights Jan Martenson, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Audrey Hepburn and UNICEF chief James Grant. UN Photo/John Isaac
