The Pamantasan Lungsod ng Maynila holds a procession on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 to commemorate the arrival of the Blessed Takayama Ukon in Manila 409 years ago or on Dec. 21, 1614. Cardinal Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda, archbishop of Osaka-Takamatsu, Japan led the procession that was also participated in by Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna. Takayama Ukon was a Japanese Catholic layman who was exiled to Manila after he refused to renounce his faith, according to a website that provided information on his life. He died in Intramuros shortly and soon after a petition for his beatification was presented to the Vatican by the Archdiocese of Manila. He was beatified in Osaka on Feb. 7, 2017, according to the same website. PHOTOS BY RIO DELUVIO
