LOVINGLY restored and functional, the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital's (UP-PGH) Dorm 1, aka Bahay Silungan, is a gift from the past. "I wanted to make a building that gave dignity to the professionals who would use it," says Ar. Mico Manalo, who was tasked with the restoration. "How many of our fellow citizens have become nurses and are working abroad? Bahay Silungan seeks to honor them and the university that formed them."
Dorm 1 was a nurses' house built in 1911 and survived the ruinous bombings of WW2. It is among the university's heritage buildings and is considered one of the important structures of the early American period. It was often described as the "most attractive building, being well proportioned inside and out," says Manalo.
