ON Nov. 28, 2023, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Presidential Proclamation 409 designating the last working day of every November as National Bike-To-Work Day. Although there are still many factors — particularly unsafe road conditions — that deter Filipinos from cycling, the reality is that many millions are already using bicycles regularly. Because they are the most vulnerable road users, they deserve to have safe infrastructure and traffic rules that will protect them from harm, particularly collisions with motor vehicles.
At the event to launch the first National Bike-To-Work Day, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa reminded us why every locality needs a safe cycling environment: "Our communities and workplaces would not be healthy without a variety of options for mobility. We must improve our country's transportation systems to make active transport (i.e., walking and cycling) and public transport easier, more accessible and more sustainable for all — transport workers, active transport users, commuters and other road users alike. Everyone has the right to ply our roads and get to our destinations safely. Our streets and our transportation systems must serve all Filipinos and not just the privileged few. This is why we at the Department of Health support active transport, not just for health and recreation, but for everyday mobility."
