A SEISMOLOGIST from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on Friday, November 17, could have been the "big one" that was being expected.

"It is possible that this strong earthquake that we experienced yesterday (Friday, November 17), in Davao Occidental and nearby areas, was already the 'big one' we were expecting," said Rainier Amilbahar, head engineer of Phivolcs and Central Mindanao seismic station chief.
