US lawmakers race to avert nightmare of Thanksgiving shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C.: United States lawmakers were to vote on Tuesday on a stop-gap funding bill as the government teeters on the brink of another shutdown crisis at a time of deep divisions over funding for Ukraine and Israel.

With a deadline to reach a deal on funding the government coming in just three days, the newly installed — and inexperienced — Republican speaker, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, has his work cut out to overcome chaos provoked by the party's hard-right.
