MANILA, Philippines: Mapua waylaid a listless Arellano University, 79-65, on Wednesday to keep its stranglehold of the No. 1 spot in NCAA Season 99 at the Filoil EcoOil Arena while evoking the memories of its glorious past.
The Cardinals finished off the Chiefs as early as the second quarter when the former broke loose from 26-all and never looked back from there to snare their seventh win in eight games, which solidified their place on top.
Mapua coach Randy Alcantara later said he is seeing the same big heart they had when the Benny Cheng-led Cardinals bunch where he is also a cog delivered the school's last championship 32 years ago.
"Si Benny Cheng nag 3-spot sa PBA, siya sentro namin. Pero pinakita namin nun malaki puso," said Alcantara. "Malaking puso din nakikita natin sa team na ito."
