THE national government's budget deficit ballooned in August as spending picked up and revenues contracted, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno said on Friday.

He told reporters that the P133.0-billion shortfall, markedly higher than July's P47.8 billion and the year-earlier P72.0 billion, was the result of a "6.58-percent drop in revenue collection coupled with 9.66-percent expenditure growth."
