Public open spaces are health-inducing, and provide kids and adults with places for exercise, socializing and leisure. Children need places to run about without looking out constantly for passing motor vehicles.

For Metro Manilans seeking options for outdoor activities and recreation, two bright spots have emerged in recent weeks. First was the announcement of 'Car-Free Sundays on Ayala Avenue' by Ayala Land and 'Make it Makati.' Second was the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) of eight national agencies providing guidelines on 'Parks and Public Open Spaces for the Promotion of Physical and Mental Health and Social Well-being.'
