LEARNING poverty is very high in the Philippines and other East Asia and Pacific countries, the World Bank said, and a focus on systemic enhancements and providing comprehensive support is needed to address the issue.
"Ask a typical 10-year-old student in middle-income East Asia or the Pacific to read a simple paragraph and answer basic questions from it and there is a good chance they will not be able to," the Washington-based multilateral organization said in a report on the state of basic education in the region.
