ON March 13, 2023, the Rotary Club of Mutya ng Pasig (RCMP) conducted the graduation of 17 trainees who completed the Tesda courses on pattern-making and sewing. The graduation was unique as the trainees included jail officers under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). They underwent training for more than 40 weeks to prepare them for the task of becoming trainers of the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in the city jails of Pasig, Mandaluyong, Caloocan and Valenzuela.

The graduation marks the first milestone of RCMP's Global Grant 2234604, approved by the Rotary Foundation in 2022 during my club presidency last year. The project is entitled "A Second Chance for Persons Deprived of Liberty." It was conceptualized by our club with the following goals: 1) build the capacity of entrepreneurs, community leaders, local organizations and community networks to support economic development in impoverished communities; 2) develop opportunities for productive work; and 3) reduce poverty in underserved communities.
