A BEACON, in its ordinary meaning, is a light that serves as a warning of hazards and danger and, at the same time, guides better direction or action. The recently concluded 2023 Blue Economy Annual Trade and Conference (Beacon), convened by the Maritime League in partnership with the Department of Transportation, indeed measured up to the expectations of what the beacon symbolizes.

The event with the theme "Blue Economy: Insights and Foresights" ushered in the annual celebration of the Maritime and National Archipelagic Awareness Month (MANA Mo). The holding of the Beacon 2023 rhymes with the MANA Mo 2023 theme of "Kapuluan, Kabuluhan, Kaunlaran" (Archipelago, Significance and Development) as the blue economy embraces all these three concepts, which served as the centerpiece of the topics delivered by distinguished resource speakers led by no less than retired associate justice of the Supreme Court Antonio Carpio; director of the UP Institute of Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, Professor Jay Batongbacal; and World Maritime University President Dr. Maximo Mejia Jr.
