ZAMBOANGA CITY: A member of a police bomb squad was killed in one of the explosions that also toppled a steel pylon in the southern Philippine province of Lanao del Norte on Friday.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) confirmed the bombing of Tower 14 of the Baloi-Aurora 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line in the village of Paiton in the town of Kauswagan. It said the attack targeted the transmission line. A second explosion from an improvised explosive killed the policeman.
NGCP, which is 40 percent owned by China, said repair of the damaged tower will commence as soon as the area is secured.
'NGCP is coordinating with authorities to secure the area and identify the perpetrators of the incident,' an NGCP said in its statement.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the province is a stronghold of various rebel groups.
On October 24 last year, NGCP's Tower 8 of the Baloi-Aurora 138-kV transmission line was also bombed, affecting the entire Zamboanga Peninsula region, the entire Misamis Occidental province and parts of Lanao del Norte province.
The attack also killed the suspected bomber.
