Chot Reyes booed by home crowd; Ravena, Abando defend coach

A good chunk of home fans in attendance in the Philippines-Italy FIBA Basketball World Cup game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday, August 29 were back at it again, showing their disapproval of Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes.
During Reyes' introduction as the Philippine head coach in the said contest, fans showered him with boos, just like they did in Gilas match against Angola last Sunday, only this time, the boos were much louder.

The fan disapproval perhaps came from the fact that Gilas hasn't won yet in the world meet entering its Italy game, which it also lost, 83-90, to go 0-3 and bow out of second round contention.
While those fans in attendance were disapproving of Reyes, his player Kiefer Ravena stood by his side.
'I know it's been happening [Reyes being booed], but I'm gonna play for my coach til the wheels fall off. This is something I have to lead by example — me, Japeth [Aguilar], and most of the guys that has been here,' said Ravena.
Ravena, who scored eight points in the contest, went on to call for a united front, saying that the reason the World Cup was brought here is to have the Filipinos rally behind and not against Gilas which includes Reyes, of course.
'That wasn't the first time that's happened, right? You guys know that. We're going to keep on competing. Again, we have to use this crowd as an advantage, not a disadvantage right? That's the main reason why we brought this event here.
'We need to be able to flip the script and use the crowd as an advantage instead of us looking over our shoulders because of what we're hearing from them.'
Rhenz Abando, a sparkplug off the bench for Gilas with eight ponts and two boards in 14 minutes, practically echoed what Ravena said.
'This is not the time for fans to bring my teammates and coaches down. I know I have a few bashers but I've been seeing so many bashing towards my teammates and especially to my coaches,' said Abando.
'This is not the right time to bash them because we're only humans who make mistakes and try to do their best. Coach [Chot] was also just doing his best and he takes all the heat for he is the head coach. We need to support him no matter what. We're doing this for us [Filipinos].'
Ravena, though, made sure to thank the fans who were fully behind Reyes and the rest of Gilas through thick and thin.
'At the end of the day, we're thankful for those who support us. For those who don't, from this point on, I hope you support us since our campaign is about to end.'
