THE country's balance of payments (BoP) recorded a shortfall in July as the government moved to settle some of its foreign debts, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported late on Friday, representing the smallest deficit seen in the past four months.

The $53-million shortfall was a marked drop from the P$1.8-billion deficit recorded in the same month of last year and was also narrower than the month-earlier deficit of $606 million.
