BEIJING: China launched air and sea drills around Taiwan on Saturday, in what it said was a "stern warning" after the island's deputy leader visited the United States.

William Lai, the frontrunner in Taiwan's leadership election next year and a vocal opponent of Beijing's claims to the self-governing island, returned on Friday from a trip to Paraguay, during which he stopped in New York and San Francisco.
