IN a recent Project Syndicate commentary published by one of my favorite sources, Singapore-based Eco-Business, economists Masyita Crystallin and Marthe M. Hinojales posed the question, "Is the net-zero transition endangering the Asian century?" It is a question well worth considering, and the authors are certainly qualified to consider it; Crystallin is a senior advisor to the Indonesian Minister of Finance, while Hinojales is an economist at the Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO).
As I am not in the copyright-infringement business, I will not rehash the authors' entire argument here, although a couple of direct quotes are unavoidable. The full article is available online if you are interested in looking it up. The basic conclusion of it, the answer to the question posed, is essentially, "Yes, the net-zero transition could 'endanger the Asian century,' but that doesn't have to be a foregone conclusion if Asian countries handle it right."
