Dear PAO,

My mother lodged a complaint before the barangay where Lily and the properties of my deceased father were situated. My mother's purpose is to claim or recover the properties of my father that were in Lily's possession. Mother presented a marriage contract to prove that she was really married to my father, thus, supporting her claim that she has an interest in the said properties. Lily also claimed to be married to my father, but she could not present a marriage contract, and she refused to recognize the existence of the marriage between my parents. During the scheduled meeting in the barangay, a barangay official mentioned that there is a presumption that Lily was married to my father because they deported themselves as husband and wife. Is there a legal basis for this presumption, and what is the reason behind it?
