LAST July 16, 2023, fellow Manila Times columnist Xiao Chua and I took our students on a field trip to the following locations: Aguinaldo Shrine and Museum in Kawit, Cavite; Museo El Deposito and Museo ng Katipunan in San Juan; and the Quezon Memorial Shrine and Presidential Car Museum in Quezon City. Professor Chua and I have been jointly holding our class field trips since the early 2010s. We make it a point to connect the locations to be visited through a theme that we then explain at each of the locations prior to commencing the tour proper. The field trip is more like a class lecture on location outside the university.
Professor Chua and I make it a point to lecture during the tour, not only to contextualize the locations being visited, but more important, to make sure that the field trip is not a repetition of the earlier visits made by the students in the same locations during their elementary and/or high school years. The lectures make all the difference.
