FOR days on end, my Manila Times columnist-colleague Yen Makabenta has tried to argue passionately that we should change the name of our country — from Philippines to Filipinas.

I do not share this view for a very simple reason. Although the Constitution provides that "Congress may, by law, adopt a new name for the country, a national anthem, or a national seal, which shall all be truly reflective and symbolic of the ideals, history and traditions of the people," I see no compelling need for it.
