BACOLOD CITY: The domestic sugar industry in the Philippines needs "better implementation" of existing laws rather than passing additional laws to protect it, Sen. Ana Theresia "Risa" Hontiveros said on Tuesday.

Hontiveros, who visited Bacolod City for a series of consultations with sugar industry stakeholders, said there was a need "for better implementation of existing laws like the Sugar Industry Development Act (SIDA)." "Is the Sugar Consultative Assembly fully constituted? Should they not be consulted in formulating the sugar orders? These are the questions the stakeholders were asking," the senator said.
