I AM relieved that, as a historian and an observer professing a more Protestant belief, I am not party to the debates among the Catholic faithful, both liberals and conservatives, on their leader Pope Francis, now in his 10th year in the papacy. They could be intense on social media.
You see, I respect the pope as a world leader and a human being with greatness of spirit. Francis is considered a reformer who took the cudgels for the Catholic Church in 2013, so wounded by sexual and financial scandals, to make it seem more accepting, inclusive and compassionate.
